Nintendo DS PictureThe Nintendo DS was released on November 21, 2004 in America and is the only Nintendo console to be released in America before it came out in Japan. The Nintendo DS features a built-in microphone and has wireless capability, allowing players to interact with each other over short distances, or online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. With its two separate LCD screens (the lower of which is a touchscreen and the upper the game viewing screen) encompassed within a clamshell design, the DS remains a highly successful gaming console, having sold over 150 million systems. Only the Sony Playstation 2 has sold more consoles to date, though it has been available since 2001.

The Nintendo DS is the successor to the Game Boy Advance series of handheld video game consoles, with the DS and DS Lite models featuring backwards compatibility with Game Boy Advance games. It is rumored the console's name stands for "Developers' System", an expression of Nintendo's hope that the system would inspire innovative game design from developers. "DS" has also been thought to stand for Dual Screens, the most obvious feature of the portable system.

While Nintendo has since released version of the Nintendo DS to include the DSi and DS XL, as well as the Nintendo 3DS, popular hits such as The New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, and Pokemon White that have such high replay value will the gaming masses coming back to this system for years to come.
